Sacred heart and blossom alpine roses
When, around the Feast of the Sacred Heart, the impressive mountain bonfires illuminate the peaks of South Tyrol, nature simultaneously reveals itself at its most beautiful: the blooming alpine roses transform the mountain landscapes into vibrant colours until mid-July. During this time, especially the Hirzer area and Meran 2000 impress with breathtaking hiking trails, stunning panoramic views, and unforgettable moments in nature – the perfect time for a relaxing getaway in Schenna.
Corpus Christi Sunday: Burning Mountains in South Tyrol
Every year on the second Sunday after Corpus Christi, this year on 14 June 2026, impressive Sacred Heart fires light up the mountains and slopes of South Tyrol. The glowing flames are a powerful symbol of attachment to home, tradition and faith.
The origins of this custom date back to 1796. At a time of great uncertainty, the Tyrolean estates gathered in Bolzano to discuss the looming threat posed by Napoleon’s troops. Abbot Sebastian Stöckl of Stams suggested entrusting Tyrol to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and praying for divine protection. This Heart of Jesus vow was accepted and has been renewed every year ever since – accompanied by the mountain fires visible from afar.
The tradition of lighting the fires themselves is even older and dates back to the Middle Ages. Around the summer solstice, fire has always been a symbol of light, protection, fertility and blessing. Even in pre-Christian times, great solstice fires were lit on the longest day of the year. With Christianisation, this gradually developed into the Sacred Heart custom we know today.
To this day, the burning mountains remain one of the most impressive and atmospheric traditions in South Tyrol, captivating both locals and visitors alike.
At the same time, the beautiful alpine rose blooms begin, transforming the South Tyrolean mountain landscape into a sea of colour until mid-July. The nearby Hirzer area and Meran 2000 are particularly stunning at this time, inviting unforgettable hikes and nature experiences. The perfect opportunity to enjoy early summer in Schenna in all its glory.
