“In every walk with nature,
one receives far more than he seeks.”

Out and about on foot:
Hiking in Schenna & surroundings

A summer holiday in Schenna leads you along historic Waalwege irrigation channels around Merano and the surrounding region. The Schenner Waalweg delights with shady paths and inviting stops for well-earned breaks. On hot summer days, the Taser cable car above Schenna beckons, offering refreshment in the cooler mountain air at 1,450 metres. The valley station is easily accessible on foot directly from the hotel.

200 kilometres of marked trails await in the hiking paradise of Schenna, from gentle strolls to challenging mountain tours, while in the Hirzer region, panorama and gourmet hikes reveal the beauty of South Tyrol’s nature. The Meran 2000 hiking area offers routes for every level and presents a spectacular 360° panorama from Lake Kaltern in the south, across the Sarntal, over the peaks of the Passeier valley, along the striking Dolomites, all the way to the Ortler.

The Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle

Famous for its connection to Empress Elisabeth of Austria, who spent the winters of 1871 and 1889 in Merano, Trauttmansdorff Castle is located in the spa town itself. Her visits were primarily due to her daughter Marie Valerie’s lung illness, whose recovery in the mild climate helped establish Merano as a renowned spa destination.

Originally a small castle called Neuberg around 1300 the later Castle was expanded with orchards and magnificent gardens. In 1990, South Tyrol established the botanical garden, which opened in 2001 and was complemented in 2003 by the South Tyrol Museum of Tourism, the “Touriseum”, within the Trauttmansdorff Castle itself.

Stroll like Empress Sissi

Today, the 12-hectare gardens at Trauttmansdorff Castle invite visitors to explore over 80 themed garden landscapes, divided into four garden worlds. Exotic plants, breathtaking views over Merano, and lovingly designed paths allow you to forget the world outside the castle walls during your summer holiday in Schenna.

Hit the heights then down in style: cable cars, climbing, paragliding & more

For spectacular panoramas at dizzying heights, Schenna offers countless experiences. Take the Meran 2000 cable car to the start of the Heini-Holzer-Via Ferrata which ascends 550 metres along dramatic cliffs.

Enjoy 1.1 kilometres of tobogganing on the Alpin-Bob, or soar high into the sky on a tandem paragliding flight. Other cable cars, such as the Hirzer cable car in the Passeier valley or the fully renovated Verdins-Tall cable car open up a variety of hiking and scenic highlights, ensuring a summer holiday in Schenna you’ll never forget.
