Famous for its connection to Empress Elisabeth of Austria, who spent the winters of 1871 and 1889 in Merano, Trauttmansdorff Castle is located in the spa town itself. Her visits were primarily due to her daughter Marie Valerie’s lung illness, whose recovery in the mild climate helped establish Merano as a renowned spa destination.
Originally a small castle called Neuberg around 1300 the later Castle was expanded with orchards and magnificent gardens. In 1990, South Tyrol established the botanical garden, which opened in 2001 and was complemented in 2003 by the South Tyrol Museum of Tourism, the “Touriseum”, within the Trauttmansdorff Castle itself.
