Once a holiday in Schenna, always a holiday in Schenna

Tradition and history of a picture-book village

Scenic and cultural diversity, together with a mild climate, shape the charming village of Schenna in South Tyrol. Nestled gently among vineyards and orchards, it is surrounded by an impressive mountain backdrop with its majestic local peaks, Hirzer and Ifinger. While the Mediterranean village centre at around 600 metres welcomes you with palms and cypresses, the mountain hamlet of Videgg, one of Schenna’s seven districts, reveals an alpine, unspoilt character at 1,536 metres.

First mentioned in documents in the 12th century as “schennan”, the name is thought to derive either from its magnificent panoramic position above the spa town of Merano, from the Latin scaena meaning stage or scene, or from a Roman landowner named “Sconius”. The proximity to Merano is evident in the fact that within just a few minutes you can immerse yourself in the lively atmosphere of the town. Small cafés, elegant boutiques, cultural highlights and the promenade along the Passer invite you to stroll and linger. The perfect way to combine your holiday in Schenna with a visit to the spa town.

Between nobility, culture and memories

As one of the most important castles in South Tyrol, Castle Schenna rises imposingly on a hill, a landmark of the village that has breathed history since the Middle Ages. The “Lords of Schenna” appeared in the 12th century as ministeriales of the Counts of Tyrol. In 1346, Petermann of Schenna, one of the most powerful nobles of the region, was commissioned by Margarethe “Maultasch”, the last Countess of Tyrol, to build the castle, which went on to have many owners over the centuries.

This changed in 1845, when Habsburg Archduke Johann of Austria acquired Castle Schenna, which has remained in the family ever since. His descendants, the Counts of Merano, still live in and manage this legacy, opening the castle’s doors to visitors during your holiday in Schenna. Apart from the private rooms of Johanna Countess of Merano Spiegelfeld and her husband Franz Count of Spiegelfeld, the entire castle can be visited on guided tours some of which also take place in the evening.

The Mausoleum

In a place of eternal rest, the Archduke is united with his family in a remembrance both loving and exceptionally beautiful. Rising high into the sky, the mausoleum was built between 1860 and 1869 in neo-Gothic style and brought to life with light and colour by leading artists of the era A monument to love and to the life’s work of Archduke Johann.

A natural spectacle in every season

Schenna in South Tyrol awakens from its winter slumber and transforms into a sea of white and pink apple blossoms. Traditional festivals for locals and guests invite you to enjoy food and drink, while numerous markets and events bring life back outdoors.

The warm season offers every opportunity to enjoy days among alpine rose meadows in the Hirzer area and to lose track of time on balmy summer nights. Hiking tours, bike excursions, climbing adventures, mountain lakes, sunny hours by the pool and boundless joie de vivre lend a unique magic to a summer holiday in Schenna.

Nature bursts into colour, and vibrant autumn leaves rustle beneath your feet as you stroll between forests and meadows. At harvest time, we bid farewell to a fruitful summer at Törggele celebrations, and look out over golden-yellow slopes.

Clear air and blue skies create a stillness made for deep breaths. White mountain peaks and gently warming sunshine on your face awaken a longing for skiing the call of wide open pistes. Beautiful Christmas markets fill us with a sense of quiet anticipation and invite us to slow down, embracing a peaceful, sunny winter in Schenna.
